I've been sharing some game dev progress screenshots and video in a few places around the Internet and, so far, the response has been great.

In game dev circles I get asked a lot about what tool I use to do blank so I figured I'd make a short list to send people to.


I use the Godot Game engine to make the games themselves.

Godot is free and open source. While that's probably reason enough to give it a try it is also amazing at what it does.

It's super easy to learn and there are a bunch of great resources around.

It just makes building games fun and the Godot community is friendly and really helpful.

You can use just about any language you want to make your game in too.

In the past I've used C# (back when I was writing my own engine on top of MonoGame) but with Godot I generally use GDScript.


Aseprite is what I use to draw and animate all of the pixel art in the game.

I've used Aseprite a lot
I've definitely got my money's worth from Aseprite.

It's really cheap and I've definitely got my money's worth.

While pixel art itself can be difficult to master, Aseprite definitely makes things easier.

I use Inkscape for all of the non-pixel art assets for the game.

Inkscape has a pretty simple workflow and, best of all, it uses SVG as its native file format.


I use LMMS for my music.

The learning curve for LMMS can be quite steep but I've found you don't need to know a whole lot in order to get something that sounds ok.

My secret is just using reverb in a few places and adding the StereoEnhancer effect to the main mixer.

I use Audacity for my sound effects.

All of the sound effects in the game so far have been recorded on my microphone and messed about with in Audacity.

It can be a fun challenge finding ways to make the right sound effects with stuff that you have lying around your house.


All of the videos on my game dev YouTube channel have been edited in DaVinci Resolve.

DaVinci Resolve is a very powerful video editor and visual effects compositor.

The free version is surprisingly full-featured; I've yet to come across something I wanted to do but couldn't.

I also use OBS Studio for recording the screen to get snippets of game play.
